‘Id’ is a work that exists at the end of a telephone line. The viewer engages with this work by picking up a constantly ringing telephone. Once engaged with the phone the listener becomes lost in the world of the autamative operator system, choosing options from menus, sub-menus, sub-sub-menus similar to that of a bank, electricity company etc. The difference is that the world of Id is structured around the seven deadly sins and although at first the questions seem normal to that of a regular autamative operating system the initially seductive and playful questions requiring decisions from the listener soon become more intimate, personal and enquiring. Depending on the series of answers given the operating systems catagorizes the listner resulting in a personal assignment given by the system.

I worked for 3 months with psychologist, Maarten Loonen, designing the system, questions and options. A special thanks to him for his cooperation and infinite wisdom. Also thanks must go to Olgar Star, the computer genius and electrical engineer who put all our hard work onto a computer chip and did whatever he did to the insides of the phone to make it work.
